ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Conrad Desroches, President of SpookyHaunting.com has always been a passionate for Halloween and Horror. “I created this business because of my love for Halloween, haunted houses, fun houses, dark rides and themed parks. I remember, as a 12 years old kid, building my first miniature haunted house for a school project. There was props and furniture (some of them taken from my sister’s doll house) laying out in rooms into a three level building. The back of the house was open in order to see the inside. There were some animated props, doors and traps activated by the use of manual triggers. I created it as a game with a story and a quest to achieve. I won the first price with that project and had to make a presentation in front of the school board and parents. Quite an experience!!!”
“As a teenager, I owned a collection of super 8 classic horror movies (super 8 you should ask…but don’t worry I am not that old) and my basement was transformed into movie theatre. My friends and I had great fun watching these movies again and again. I even made my own horror movies with my super 8 camera. So much fun memories.”
“Still in my basement, I also organized what we called “Horror Nights.” I invited some of my friends over for a special evening. The lights were shut down, we told ghosts stories, played eerie music and created special effects (most of them were quite simple but effective). One or two friends were hiding as secret helpers and produced the strange noises and effects. They wore monster masks and costumes and made an appearance for the final punch which made the girls screaming out loud!!! I made a lot of those Horror Nights and this is how I became known for doing great “Theatrical Séances.” I learned everything I could on magic illusions and spooky tricks. I then made a few Theatrical Séances professionally and earned some money with it on spare time, but today I only do it for fun.”
“Meanwhile, I have never stopped being fascinated by dark rides and walkthroughs. I even became a member of the IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions), the TEA (Themed Entertainment Association) and the IAHA (International Association of Haunted Attractions). I attended many shows and seminars (some speakers were leaders at Disney, Universal, etc.) and developed, at the same time, many relationships with manufacturers and experts in the amusement/Halloween industry and acquired a specific knowledge.”
“I later became involved in different seasonal events (Halloween, Christmas, etc.) during the 90s as I had been known for my work from my basement to shopping centers and nightclubs. At that time, I had been asked to design a new concept for a small existing amusement park in Riviere-du-Loup and for a new boutique with seasonal products in the tourist area of the old Quebec City.”
“My career then leads me to meet a project developer who was working on an amusement park project. Becoming his partner made me get involved in many tourist/leisure projects such as: hotels, golf courses, condos units, congress center, business complex, outdoor tennis center, health resort and of course a themed park.”
“Working on the themed park project was extraordinary experience for me. It included a Miniature park (75 buildings 1:25 scale), a water park (wave pool, lazy river, slides, etc.), and an indoor amusement park, all this located on the Quebec zoo’s available land. The indoor amusement park had 5 walkthrough attractions based on 5 different themes among which was a haunted house. I had a great opportunity to test some new ideas and taking all of my knowledge of haunting and turning it into new concepts. Anytime I had the chance I would visit amusement parks and seasonal haunted events taking notes on what to do and what not to do. But none of these haunts were suited for my project. I quickly realized that I had to design a concept adapted for year around attractions. Quite a challenge!!!”
“I needed to design a concept as well as for the tourists as for the local people. I needed to build something that would stimulate return customers. Something more interactive for the off season and more passive during the tourists and Halloween season. Something that has never been seen before and that will sure to entertain, amaze and scare the guests.”
“Seasonal haunted houses are popping up everywhere in the USA, but if you notice most do not succeed. They'll be in business one year, and gone the next. There are many reasons for this. Most importantly, you always have to change your haunt every year if you plan on staying in the same location. You also need to innovate. There's nothing more surprising to the visitor than the unexpected. You can have an awesome haunt with whatever your budget is to start. No expensive animatronics will replace a lack of knowledge, experience and vision.”
“I finally designed a concept that meets all these criteria. Unfortunately, the land on which the project was supposed to be was not available anymore since the government decided to close the zoo and turn it into a public park!!! The concept was left on paper but I intend to make the haunted industry benefits from it. And I have plans for this!!!”
“During that time, in March 2003, the company expanded its business by offering horror/Halloween merchandise for sale through an eBay Store. The huge success made me realize that a specialized web site would be more suitable for that kind of business even though eBay was a good experience to start with.”
“When we are not working on the many projects we have, my wife Carole and I travel all over seeking haunts that we haven’t toured yet. She is also my partner in the business and takes care of accounting and order processing. Three years ago, in just one weekend, we visited 12 haunted attractions. Poor Carole!!! She will never get used to those scary tours. My arm, which she firmly grabs during each walkthrough, would tell you if it could speak (LOL).”
I really like what I do and hope to do it for a long time. One of the best parts is to share it with you.
Thanks for taking the time to read my story. I would be more than happy to hear about yours or any comments you would like to share with me.
Sincerely,
Conrad Desroches
